| I'm new and don't know what to do... |
|
|
| I was checking out this website and thought that fishing out of a kayak really looked like a lot of fun. So, I went all out and bought a new kayak, fishing pole, and PFD. All I need now is to be told what to use and where to go. I'm interested in catching anything that puts up a good fight. I would appreciate any info. Thanks, Brad |

Interested in whatever puts up a good fight eh? Get married you'll be fighting for the rest of your life.
Hah. Well you're lucky to be fishing in VA it offers plenty of species and different kinds of waters to fish. My suggestion would be to target some spadefish. They're easy to fish for but, the hard part maybe getting there by kayak. |

Knotty, you down wit OPP?
You picked the hardest fish to find from a kayak! Spadefish, cobia, and black drum are the only Ches Bay gamefish I haven't gotten from a kayak yet. I haven't targeted any of them yet either. You might get lucky at the first island on a spadefish but I haven't been yet.
Brad, if you want to start out with something easy, head over to Rudee Inlet and troll some grubs around and maybe bounce some bait around the islands or bridge. Rudee is a good, calm place to get used to your kayak and there can be some nice fish in there too. Otherwise, watch this board and go with someone when you see they are headed out. The easiest fish to catch are going to be croaker this time of year. A bottom rig with shrimp or squid will do the trick. A good size one will put up a heck of a fight too! Flounder are all over the place right now too and are pretty easy to catch if you don't mind throwing back small ones. The over 19" keepers are harder to find. Ken, shut up, you suck at tennis AND fishing .
I hope I didn't sound like I think I know what I'm talking about. I just happen to know a few good spots and methods for this area. Every time I fish out of my element I don't catch jack. I suck. I might have to put out a disclaimer that I don't know she it and I am definately not an 'expert' or fishing 'celebrity'. The redfish are pretty plentiful in Lynnhaven and not real hard to catch. I would recommend heading out with a member and let them show you the where, when and how. I am not going to put up any specific spots but I will tell you that anywhere there is an edge, creek mouth or drop off has been holding reds this year. I haven't really caught them consistently in the flats without any transition area like I was this time last year but they will lock on to those areas soon. The shallow part of a channel ledge is a good place to start right now. I will be going this weekend if you are interested gimme a shout. My number is 757-348-2232.
