Surf Launch Seminar

Does anyone know how to launch in the surf? Just thinking that would be a great thing to learn and practice. It would open up a whole bunch of more fishing spots like those wrecks and such along the ship grave yard in our back yard.  It might be fun if nothing else. We could do it at Sandbridge or somewhere like that. Anyone else interested?

Re: Surf Launch Seminar

This is how you do it and I'm not joking.

Get the boat past the shorebreak, jump in the boat.  Look for a lull in between wave sets if there is one and paddle like hell until you get through!  Tie all your stuff down and put your rods down or inside the yak so they don't break off on the bottom if you go over.  Getting back in is the harder part.  If you have a shorter boat it is easier, you can surf it in, my Tarpon 160 was scary coming in.  I had to backpaddle when a wave came bc the boat didn't surf well.  I had an 11' Ocean Kayak Caper before that and that thing rode a wave like a surfboard so it was easy.

Re: Surf Launch Seminar

Jesse surf launches and returns are very similar to turtle recoveries IMHO, the best thing to do is take your EMPTY yak and practice until you get your confidence level up. After that what Tom said. Oh yeah do it while the water is still warm !!

Re: Surf Launch Seminar

I'm going to Sandbridge about 3pm to practice. I'll let you know how it goes. If anyone else sees this and wants to join in on the fun, come on out. I'm gonna get on it!

Re: Surf Launch Seminar

I should have checked the wind speeds before I went. there was a pretty stiff wind out of the south east so I didn't try to launch. I'll wait for a calmer day.

Re: Surf Launch Seminar

I've been doing lots of surf launches here lately and done lots of practicing with an empty yak. I have a 14 fter and once its loaded with gear and a fair amount of water in the hull after a good day offfshore prepare to be flipped!!! I was fine surfing waves and doing all that with an empty yak no problems. What ever you do avoid "surfing" the waves in and try to follow behind the last wave in a set and paddle like HELL! Becareful...the surf will consume you!

Re: Surf Launch Seminar

Pretty work Matt but where's the hammer 'dent' in his head ??

Did you catch that on the little rod in your lap or one of the big boys behind you ??  Bait or buck-tail ??
