power pro vs fireline

After the last meeting's talk, my ears have been perked up to people talking about power pro, and spinning reels.  I have been hearing about a lot of people getting wind knots, losing line, and having to flip the bail early to prevent tangles, etc...when using power pro.  Now, I do use power pro on all my bait casters, but on my spinners i use fireline...with absolutely NO problems like those mentioned..i havent tried power pro on my spinners, and maybe if I did, I would....  But since the meeting I took a closer look at the two, and came up with this conclusion...

Fireline has a tighter braid, that almost looks linear (like dental floss) versus the very obvious braid in power pro.  Power pro seems to be thinner if you compare equal weights. Power pro feels smoother new, but the coating seems to wear off faster, my fireline seems to still have that coating after much more use.  The fireline has memory...not as bad as mono, but it has a little.  I don't have power pro on a spinner, so i cannot attest to the memory (anyone?)  They both have about the same sensitivity, very little stretch, etc....but for spinning rods, fireline hasn't given me the problems everyone seems to have with pp.

Will I change my casting rods to fireline?, probably not...will I try pp on my spinning rods?, probbably not...why mess with a good thing right?  I just thought i would throw my experiences out there to help "untangle" any questions for someone switching to braid from mono.  Hope it helps...

p.s. I was at the store the other day and they had  clear fireline, well fairly clear....my next spool will be that.

Good observations.  It has been a while since I used fireline on my spinning reels but one thing I do remember well is that it seemed to cut into itsself more than powerpro when pressure is applied.  Am I wrong?

Pressure applied?  That would involve CATCHING a fish...i dont do that, i am an extreme catch and release proponent, i dont even catch....just release...LOL

I think that may be an issue more in  baitcasters, since fireline is more "flattish" than the round braid of power pro.  I could definetly see that being an issue there...I don't really see it on my spinning outfits, not noticibly anyways.

Re: power pro vs fireline
I've tried them all and decided on powerpro a while back and haven't used anything else since for my small to med. spinners. I do use mono (Suffix Tri) on my heavers for the beach but almost everything that I throw lures or verticle jig with has got powerpro on it.

Re: power pro vs fireline
I prefer the Stren Superbraid over the others, it seems to holt the color and shape better. Still throw the bail over by hand though to prevent the stray loop from forming. But if you do get one, its easier to work out of the stren than the others ,in my opinion anyway.

There is a great write up in the August issue of Sport Fishing on knot strength, and variations in some common knotts that will get more out of your braid, mono, and braid to mono connections.  I feel a little smarter now.

Re: power pro vs fireline

best for the money:  power pro (  dollar cheaper than  others and you get a few more yards)cons: it starst fading after a month

best performance out of the box: suffix braid ( very soft ) cons: easily tangled on the tip of your rod because it is very limp

best all around : stren super braid ( takes a few cast to break it in ) cons: takes a few cast to break it in

worst all around: berkley crystal fire line: comes out like a slingky out of your rod even with a hundred cast, holds memory like cheap fifty lb. test line in a cold day. pros: they say its less visible than other braids

hope this helps

Re: power pro vs fireline
The reason you throw the bail by hand is to prolong the life of the reel, which in turn will minimize the loop formation.  I stop the line going out with my index finger of my casting hand and that seems to work.

Re: power pro vs fireline

Power Pro is my favorite hands down. I have tried all the different lines and continue to come back to Power Pro. I only tried the others to prove to myself that power pro is still the best in my mind. However, I do not concern myself  with visibility or fade because I use a flouro, mono or hybrid leader tied into the braid. I have tested knot breaking strength and line breaking strength of the Power Pro after it "fades" and it is not degraded significantly from when it is new and it still breaks above the rated strength. Stren Super braid would be my next choice but it takes too long to break in and has significantly more water absortion than Power Pro and it actually mildewed on one of my reels, I have never had that happen with any other braid. Just my .02, none of this is an absolute, try it all use what you like. Once you decide on a brand by the large quantity spools and save considerable moolah.

To elaborate on what Chad said about bulk spools, if you like PowerPro and want it in bulk go see or call Randy at the Bait Shack in P'town. Best prices by far in this area !!

A little off subject here, but doesn't PowerPro make a braid AND a microfilament? I've seen it in the store advertised both ways. I've tried the Yo-Zuri Hybrid as a leader on a reel backed with Fireline and was unhappy with the stiffness of the leader (20 lb.), but I haven't tried ANY of the PowerPro stuff.

I use the Vanish for a leader, only 2-3' or so.

Re: power pro vs fireline

I'm new to this site, and maybe al little late to help you out, but someone this year may see this forum and need a new thought.  I put power pro on my son's Zebco 33;  the 30 lb stuff.  He can horse anything out of the Galveston Bay with it.  I put 65lb on my Ambassador 7000; 30lb, 50lb on the spools of my Okuma 55A Epixor.  I thumb the spool of the 7000 like I would any baitcaster, and I don't have a problem with it.  I have caught some nice fish, or sharks with this setup.  It lays right back down the way it came off the plastic spool.   The Zebco was a different matter; not because of the line, but because of the way the reel rotates, and lays the line on the spool loose.  I have had to peel out mono every once in awhile, or just make a long cast to get it to lay tight; so there is not much you can do about it with either type.  I haven't had a problem with the line on my Okuma, and it seems to lay tight; even with the 8lb dia. I plan to load up my two Penn 113's with 100lb, or 150lb.I will get about 475 yards of this stuff. As far as for the fade issue; it is kevlar line, I think.  A permanant marker will cover up the fade.  The water around here in the Gulf isn't always sandy colored.  I read years ago that if offshore fishermen would spray their mono with flat black paint, that the finicky snapper wouldn't be spooked by it, because it would vanish.  Anyway, my line cost more than the reels I found on sale; but I won't be replacing my line unless I get spooled by "Jaws"!
