What's the best rod and reel combination?
We're just getting in to this saltwater kayak fishing (we moved here from Kansas) so my son and I were wondering, what is the best all around combination for fishing out of a kayak? (rockfish, flounder whatever)

Re: What's the best rod and reel combination?

7-9 weight fly rod with 8-9wt intermediate line ( I like to over line the rod so I can make more accurate short casts)

OR

med weight spinning rod  with a matching reel.  I like the shimano stradics and terramar inshore series rods.

With the exception of chasing big fish, most people are throwing 1/8 to 1/4 lures.  Rods in the 6-7 foot range reels are rated for around 12lb test.  obviously depending on style and species there are more options.  I got started with 30 dollar spinning combos from walmart.  That way I did not feel bad when I dropped on in the water.  If you fish every weekend and rinse them off after use, they will last about a year.  they worked well and I still get a couple each year for guests and friends to use.

Re: What's the best rod and reel combination?
On 7' spinning rods, be mindful of the but length (section aft the reel seat).  Too long and it gets in the way.  Have been pleased with Shimano Sedona w/ 20lb fireline.  Also a fan of BassPro GS series of graphite rods...normally $30 but go on sale for $20 pretty reguarly.  Was in Harbor Frieght buying a floor nailer (reason why my yak has been grounded for weeks) and bought their $10 graphite rod as an experiment.  Guides will probably rot off in 6 months but I have been known to buy the $10 Fugi set and rewrap a cheap rod.  Still using a $20 graphite rod I bought from Walmart about 10 years ago.  Been re-wrapped twice and is due for more string. Oh, and I also subscribed to the mentality of not being too upset if the rod goes over.  Have had several occasions when I grabbed it in mid flight especially when the mutant croakers are here.

Re: What's the best rod and reel combination?
I have purchased my rod repair items from Bishop's Tackle over here on George Wash. Hwy (a.k.a. hwy17) at the N. News/York Co. line.  They have a rod builing room and carry flex coat products.  He's also pretty helpful with advice. Recently I replaced a single guide and did not want to pay the $ for the two bottle kit (has fairly limited shelf life once opened); he said they use the 5 minute, two part epoxy like you get at any hardware store for quick repairs.  Not as good as the real rod building product but that worked for what I needed.  He's a good guy, willing to assist and answer questions.

Re: What's the best rod and reel combination?
I usually use an intermediate sinking (1-3"/sec)  If I know I will be fishing deep(>6-7ft) or in strong current I go with a full sinking or sink tip with running line.

Re: What's the best rod and reel combination?
Shimano Stradic 4000 FI and a 7'6" or 7'10" Shimano Terramar Rod is a great combination for your area. I use the 3000 reel down here in FLA but you got those Striper up there that can really work a line and this years 4000 is a lot smaller than the old 4000 FH. THe Terramar has an over the counter lifetime warranty and you can get them at Oceans East II and Anna may carry them also. Hope that helps. Spool them up with some 6lb power pro and you'll be in heaven. 20 lb flouro and go get your self a pink skiiterwalk and startting working the grasslines for Redfish in two months.

Re: What's the best rod and reel combination?
Just to add my 2 cents to this - you'll hear lots of guys talking Shimano and I only have one problem with Shimano - taking them apart to clean and grease sucks. Maybe it's because I grew up here fishing the bay and back then all anyone used was Penn and I still swear by them. I use a 450ssg right now with 10-12lb test line on a 7' ugly stick (intercoastal series). I bought the rod at Walmart for 39 bucks and the reel online at RiverMarineSupply.com for 79.95 - the Reel has caught tons of fish in the last couple years and is still just as smooth as day one. I tear them down a few times a year - clean and lube with the best silicone lube I can get my hands on. It's been under water a bunch of times - even in the high salt content and sand mix along the beaches of Costa Rica. In the same time i've trashed a number of Shimano 4000s that were not even my primary reel - TOO MUCH PLASTIC and too many small springs and cogs. Once you have to open a Shimano reel it will never be the same (unless you are seriously experienced in working on them). If you spend the extra money to get a real metal Penn Slammer you'll be passing it to your kids in 25yrs. If we were talking about level wind - then i'd go Shimano TLD or Torium for sure.
