Bluefish for bait??

For those who use bluefish for bait, especially for flounder - how do you cut up the bluefish?  Do you fillet, fillet and do strips, cut chunks, etc?  Thanks

Re: Bluefish for bait??

I usually strip them up about an inch wide and about a 6 inch strip to a taper, then I usually salt them and leave it in the fridge for up to a week, hook it on a jighead and fish it bouncing on the bottom!

That's the trick, they'll hold well in the freezer too if you salt them. I have a decent electric fillet knife I use for this.

Re: Bluefish for bait??

They are everywhere right now and easy to catch so I like to use them fresh. I keep a small piece of 1" x 4" in the yak with a BS fillet knife rubber-banded to it and after catching a few and putting them on the stringer so they stay fresh I then fillet them as I need them for baits. The fillet get striped into 4-6" long by 1-2"  wide at top to a point on the bottom pcs.  I like to fish them on the same rigs I fish live baits, a 2/O circle that's on a 18-24" long 40 lb. leader to a swivel with a 3/4" oz. sliding egg above a bead.

If there's any 'left-over' blues at the end of the day they go home in the cooler (hopefully with some game fish for dinner  ) and I'll cut them up and brine them before freezing them. Tupperware container with a layer of course Kosher or Sea salt on the bottom, strips on that, more salt on strips and just layer them like that until they're gone. I leave them in the fridge (covered up !! ) for a day and if I'm not using them right away I'll freeze them in small portion-sized bags for the next trip.

Re: Bluefish for bait??

Scott,

I know some will disagree with me but I say eat em or throw em back.  There are so many trashy little baitfish you can use for flounder bait.  Menhaden, mullet, shad, etc.  That's if you want to use cut bait.  Live anything is better than cut anything.  Live gugeons will catch flounder all day long.  I just don't see the point in killing a hard fighting game fish like a blue for the sake of strip baits.   And if you guys think flounder or bluefish strips REALLY work THAT well, you've been watching the power boaters to much.  Maybe get some big fluke rigs with spinners, sparkles, feathers, and some glitter too.

Hey Tom you Bluefish smokin' , conservation minded, tree hunchin' SOB...............BITE ME !!

BTW the other day when we fished together and both caught Blues and Flounder who caught the bigger fish ?? Was it the guy fishing with live gudgeons or the guy fishing with fresh Bluefish strips. Just so everyone knows, you know to clarify things

As a disclaimer I also like to use live bait when it's readily available and even eat Bluefish but obviously don't mind whackin' one of the 50 Ka-trillion Blues out there to use as bait, that works VERY well BTW

Oh yeah I've quit using the fancy-smancy Flounder rigs with feathers and spinners and such because I found out from trying that the neked hooks work just as well and cost a whole lot less when you hang the bottom which happens a lot when Flounder fishing.

Re: Bluefish for bait??

Actually a Gulp minnow on a jighead probably works as well as anything.  Ray contends that he catches a ton of keepers that way but hasn't gotten a citation since he started using Gulps.  I still think it is a 'right place, right time'  thing.  If you are nailing small flounder, give up or move.  Usually flounder of the same size stick together in groups.  I think gudeons work best until you can net some baby spot or mullet.  And flounder will take pretty much any cut bait.  They love squid too but you know what happens when you use squid;  CROAKAZ!

Croakaz been know to like Gulps too but I think when you catch them on a lure you got to call them 'Silver Drum'
