Eels... How to Use 'em?

New Guy here so excuse the questions. I have been told that Eels are the prefered bait for Stripers (I am planning an trip to fish the " Concrete Ships" next month). I have never used them before (don't need them for fishing over here in Roanoke). I would like to know how you transport them (from Bait shop until they get put on the hook), how you handle them (I've heard that they are "Slippery as an... well... an Eel). How many do you normally purchase for a day or night of fishing?

Thanks for the help,

Dennis Adams

Re: Eels... How to Use 'em?

On Ice? How much? Cany ya kill 'em with too much ice and or shock them to death from going from ice bath to ocean temps? Any Striper will do for my first time out. If my local 'Yak buddy won't / can't go would it be adviseable to go it alone?

Thanks for the help Red_Fish.

Th is works great for me.

Buy the cheapest sandwich ziplock bags you can.

Get the eels and put them on ice until they are sedated.

put 1 eel in each bag. (I do it the night before)

Now you have individual bagged eels.

Once you get to the fishing spot, move the eel in the bag so his head is in the corner.  Hook the eel under the chin and out the eye (through the bag)  then once hooked rip the eel out of the bag and cast it out into the water.  You never have to handle the eel.  Works GREAT.

I have left eels on ice over night in bags...you have to work really hard to kill them.  Though you may be too late for Stiper .  Take a rod with some gulp or bass assasins that you can cast while you soak your eel.  There should always be some hanging around.

If that does not work for you.  Post up and meet some club members at the HRBT at night and you will get all the small striper (15-22 inches) you will want.

As long as the winds are calm, and you are dressed for the water temp ships can be done alone assuming you are fairly accomplished paddler.  Only you will know if you feel safe.

If you want a striper sure thing, serriously, HRBT at night.  Plus shot at flounder, specs, blue fish and others.

Hope it helps.

Re: Eels... How to Use 'em?

Dennis, the tecnique and location you are referring to is used mostly during the late fall/winter.  If you want a shot at a decent striper, bring or buy a cast net and net some small spot or croaker.  If you can't throw a net you can also get some tiny hooks and fish with shrimp in the creeks to catch some.  You want them to be 4"-6".  If you use croaker, cut the spines off before putting them on the hook.  Hook through the mouth and out the top.  Fish them over the tunnel tube on the south side of the HRBT at dawn or dusk and you should hook up.  You can also fish the light line at night but live bait over the tubes you will have a better shot at something in the 24"-30" range.    Keep an eye out here and maybe one of us can head out then too.  I know I'll be targeting them once they come in season on the 16th!  Good luck.

Re: Eels... How to Use 'em?

All good stuff so far and I'll second or third of forth the opinion that the Big Striper fishery at the ships especially with eels is a winter time fishery only. Some will tell you that that area is a natural winter time location for eels in general so that's why they work so well for bait.  Eels are very easy to keep alive and most of us just put them in the floating bait bucket and handle them to the hook with a rag or gloved hand to compensate for their slipperyness.

Something different that I tried this year was hooking them in the tail instead of the head and that was for a few reasons; one they seem to swim better away from the hook and look more natural that way, two they don't tend to wrap themselves around the leader as much when hooked that way and three they live for another days fishing better when not hooked through the brains.

Re: Eels... How to Use 'em?

Thanks guys, this is all good stuff you're feeding me and I'm eatin' it up. If there is a season on Stripers, how do you keep from catching them when you're fishing for something else?

You can catch all you want.  Just don't keep any.

Re: Eels... How to Use 'em?

OK... I am planning on a trip to Kiptopeke this coming November and December for the 40"+ Stripers. What I want to know is:

How many Eels do you guys normally purchase for a days fishing?

Is there a shop on that side of the CBBT that sells Eels?

Usually I'll split a dozen with another member, but my windows are usually smaller than some others.

Just about any shop southside should have them in season, and Chris's in Kipto as well.
