Cold Water Gear

Before the Winter comes I want to stock up on some gear to keep me warm. Do you guys wear wet suits or will waders work. Im guessing a ski jacket will work for the top. Do you wear anything else over your legs?

Thanks,

Cashin

Cashin--

I got oodles of info on this. Let me find my list of sources for the seminar I did.

In the meantime, if you got the coin, a full drysuit is best. I don't have coin, so I do the waders/dry top/pfd thing. Against my skin I wear something to wick away sweat. Between the two I wear something to insulate me and keep me warm.  I would advise against using a ski jacket. Ever.

Look around thew site, go back a few pages here and in Safety. I think there's a few threads floating around.

Re: Cold Water Gear

I'm gonna throw in my .02 cents here on waders. If you go swimming wearing waders with booties you have a very good chance of those filling up with water and you go sinking down to the bottom. A decent set of dry pants will keep the water off and like Grommet said use a wicking layer on your legs and top. You can get some good quality dry tops and pants from NRS for some decent prices. I prefer a farmer john wetsuit ( no arms) and dry pant and dry top over it. You always have to dress for the possibility of going swimming. If the air temp and water temp don't add up to 120, your chance of getting hypothermic greatly increases.

LOL. Asking someone what's best to wear in winter is akin to asking what's the best light tackle rod/reel combo. Everyone has their own preferences and swears by them.

Nothing wrong with what Hammer suggested (he's ACA certified, I b'leeve, which means he knows his schtuff), and I'm certain that way works, but if you're considering the waders route, for clarification: waders, then wader belt, then drytop, then PFD.

Then you don't sink. This is me:

Re: Cold Water Gear

Whatever you deceide to get, take the extra time BEFORE IT GETS REALLY COLD and try out your stuff. We jumped in from the boat ramp at the hrbt. That's me on the right. You can see the air trapped in my dry-top. At first that air made my boots float and i couldnt get right. It was kinda scarey. It's good to know how your gear is going to react before you need it.
