hot ditch access, or Gimilton Bridge launch

I saw some guys park at the space on the west end of the bridge on Military Hwy.  It looked like they walked a path to the river with fishing pole in there hands.   There is a sign up on the RR tracks that says No Tresspassing so I know you cannot use the tracks.

Anybody launch from here?   I know the Chesapeake Yatch Club launch is $10 and just across from the hot ditch.  I am just looking for an alternative.

Re: hot ditch access, or Gimilton Bridge launch

if you park i think it is $5- if you launch on the side. $10 if you use the actual launch, i think.

i am sure someone will correct me if i am wrong.

that is the only access i know of.

Myself and Robert went to the Hot Ditch.  We won't talk about our catch... but they expect 10 bucks to park and launch regardless if you launch beside the ramp or on it.   He was adamant about it.    5 bucks if you just park and don't have a kayak with you....   Also there were wade fishermen at the ditch itself. Apparently they park in abandoned warehouse area and take a chance.  Saw plenty of fishermen up along the ditch closer to the plant too.  Only on the west side though.

Re: hot ditch access, or Gimilton Bridge launch
Over the holidays I made my way over to the orange floating barrier and noticed an area of overgrowth and a gap in the bouys. After cutting my way through the vines and paddling up into that area a guy asked me if I was a "Dominion employee." He said that I was in private property and should leave. They were fishing with lives minnows and bobbers, walking along the bank and doing very well! Wish I could have showed those knuckle draggers how to get it done with a fly rod, but I left instead. Unless you don't mind a 2 mi.+ paddle from the 'free' launches at G.B. Locks or the Jordan Bridge.

Even though it's hard to make yourself fish that area unless it's the dead of winter when the number of options are down those other parts of the river are very fishy year round. There's just so many other places to fish in the spring, summer & fall when it's not too windy it's hard to go there unless the weather conditions $uck and that's the only place besides Rudee to find shelter and fish when you're jones'n. Rick and I did a little scouting this past fall and I plan to try it some more this year, at least when it's not going off elsewhere.

Actually, it's a 5mile paddle from either direction, not worth it at all. 10 bucks for a good ramp, safe parking and good lighting if you're early or late. Worth it to me.

Re: hot ditch access, or Gimilton Bridge launch
I was impressed by the amount of scrap steel, large diameter wire and general trash just grabbing at my tires when I was there.  I got out without any problems but I'd recommend staying away from the edge on the west side where everyone seems to park.  I see some parking closer to that little shack near the ramp.   Just don't pull up into the edge tight.  Stay out in the main cleared area and completely away from the edge.  Just an observation.

Re: hot ditch access, or Gimilton Bridge launch

Since I don't live the area, I am rely on Google Map. But I am having hard time to locate Hot ditch and Chesapeake Yacht club for launch. I have 3 questions.

1)  I could not locate Chesapeake Yacht club on maps.google.com. Does any one know the street name near the yacht club? I see two marinas on both sides of WesternHwy Bridge (RT 164) on the Google map

2) location of Hot ditch (from Chesapeake Yacht Club)

3) I heard that the water at Hot Ditch is warm. Is there a nuclear Power Plant?

Thanks,

Joe

Re: hot ditch access, or Gimilton Bridge launch

Hi Joe,

The way to the hot ditch is Moses Grandy Trail to Millville Rd. to the end and Chesp. Yacht is in front of you. Look up Moses Grandy Tr. on google map and follow Millville Rd. to end and you will see large open area that is the marina. It cost $3.00 to park they use honor system just put money in box next to the boat ramp, there are signs and use little cleared area next to ramp to launch kayak.

The location of hot ditch is straight ahead under bridge from marina about 10 minute paddle from launch.

The power plant is coal fired plant.

Hope this helps.

John

Re: hot ditch access, or Gimilton Bridge launch

I called and checked last week... it's 10 bucks if you put a boat in the water... doesn't matter if you use the ramp or not. You could launch from Deep Creek Locks park, but I think the paddle around is about 2 miles. I like fishing the Hot Ditch, but I'm ready to try some new places.... been thinking about Bennetts Creek, or maybe Chuckatuck Creek. Wouldn't mind trying Lynnhaven or Rudee... if anyone's going, let me know.

Re: hot ditch access, or Gimilton Bridge launch

Joe, here you go;

1) Chesapeake Yacht is on the north end of Millville Rd. It's also the entrance to the Deep Creek branch of the Elizabeth River and the north end of the Dismal Swamp canal. The highway it's close to is 64 not 164 and it's in Deep Creek not Western Branch.

2) The 'Hot Ditch' is body of water due north of Chesapeake Yacht as you go under the 64 bridge where the discharge water comes out of the power plant.

3) The discharge water is normally around 30 degrees warmer than rest of river water that comes from the intake that's just north on the river itself as you head towards the Hwy. 13 Gilmerton Bridge. The power plant is coal fired not nuclear so the water is also non-nuclear, however that part of the river is highly industrialized and even with todays regulations on pollution it's still somewhat dirty.

Hope this helps, Jay

Re: hot ditch access, or Gimilton Bridge launch

John,

Thanks for the Info. I probably drive 3 hours to reach Hot Ditch. Time is the most expensive item for me. Fee for the launch and money for the lures are the cheapest.  I once paid $17.00 for a kayak launch. I did'nt mind at all.

I am planning to hit Hot Ditch or Rudee this Saturday once I figure out the proper lures for specks.

Thanks,

Joe
