Two-way radio preferences
Anyone have any input regarding their two-way radio preferences? Bass pro has a series of midlands, but only the two most expensive are waterproof (which I would think should be a consideration). Also, they have (up to) a 26 mile range. Thoughts, please.

Re: Two-way radio preferences
There are many choices and prices in radios. You will want a waterproof one of course. Me, well I purchased mine from Wal-mart. Its a Cobra brand thats water proof up to three meters for a set amount of time. It has prioirty frequency ability, channel 16/72 instant access. For power it has three power settings 1/3/5 watts which of course will influence range for transmission. Its decent sized and was $99. So shop carefully and find one you like! - Jason

Re: Two-way radio preferences
My latest handheld is the Uniden Voyager, which I've been using for about a year. It's compact & fits in a PFD pocket, waterproof (JIS7), holds a charge, and takes a beating. I sometimes wear it on/in the PFD when doing rescue and rolling practice in the sea kayaks, then rinse it in a bucket afterwards. The only signs of wear are scratches on the LCD display, even though it's been dropped several times and gets immersed frequently.

Lots of radios out there to choose from which will have most of the same functions... size, durability, and waterproof level were my biggest concerns.
Hope this helps & good luck!!

Re: Two-way radio preferences

I located one at Amazon for about $155 (does that sound right?). I cannot locate any reference to range at 5W under optimal conditions. What could you tell me about that?

Thanks

Re: Two-way radio preferences

Limiting factors for distance should be weather and terrain, the antennas work best with line of sight so if you're transmitting to a ship or receiving station that is elevated you'll get better range. 5W transmission equals 5W transmission, manufacturer or brand shouldn't affect range as long as they all transmit with the same power. To get maximum range buy a kayak you can stand up in!

I have a cobra as well, bought it online for 99 a couple years back.  So far has been great, very waterproof.

What ever you do, keep it on YOU and not your boat....in an emergency you wont always be ON your boat.....and that's when you need it the most!

p.s. there are a couple companies that make smaller more "pocket friendly" versions of thier radios.

Re: Two-way radio preferences
Thanks for the comments. I found a new Voyager for a bargain price of $110; it will live on my PFD (which I wear religiously).

Re: Two-way radio preferences
I think I'm going with the Standard Horizon for 3 reasons - It is JIS 7, which means submersible. It has an emergency strobe built in. It comes with a 3 year warranty. The 4th (extra credit) reason is that Ray recommended it!

Ended up with the Cobra after all, but you don't argue with Santa! Whatever he leaves, you accept graciously!
