Because I dislike wearing bulky, hot lifejacktets I usually put it in the back, except in the winter when I wear it.   Well, last month going down the James it fell out and I lost it, so I went and bought another.   I finally found one I am willing to wear  all the time.   I got the  new Astral V-Eight and it has very low bulk, light, small and very cool with airmesh.   Very cool, got it at Appomatox for $108, can't find it cheaper, but definately a winner!

I got a stohlquist from WRO when they had them for 60.00.(norm 120.00) I thought that was a good price for something that might save my live some day! Also designed to paddle.I've found it to be very comfortable while fishing.

I have a Stohlquist Asea PFD... it's very comfortable... even in the heat, with breathable  UV longsleeve/pant. If heat is the issue, I suggest the UV clothing.., mine actually retains some water for a little bit, so if I start to get hot, I splash the forearms and lap, get the hat wet, and life is good.

Excellent point... I think a $14 PFD may be on the same level of quality as a pool noodle. No, you don't have to spend big money, but you certainly should think about the level of quality and the rating type of the PFD, and make your decision not solely on cost.
