Kayakers drownings equal 20% of all Drownings

While fishing Lynnhaven a view weeks ago I was approached by an officer for The Coast Guard Aux. After my inspection, we were chatting and I asked about drownings. He mentioned the latest statics and I was not really surprised.... I guess people feel that because they are relatively close to land they have false since of security. He stated there is no law requiring a kayaker to wear I life jacket.

My challenge to all would be to set an example by always wearing a Coast Guard approved PFD when in your kayak.

Thanks for letting me sound off, Tim

John, the CG checks your PFD and audible signaling device (whistle) as well as checking optional equipment such as VHF, flares, lights or whatever else you may carry followed with a general discussion of requirements/recommendations. I've been checked a couple of times and gotten a safety inspection sticker to put on the boat both times. They're usually as interested in what we're catching as to what we're riding. Be nice to them, they just may have to save your behind one day.

Do they check to be proactive or will they ticket you for failing to have the proper equipment.  I got curious after reading the initial post that there is no actual law requiring one to where a pfd.  I'm assuming that the requirement to have it accessible remains the law....or is it?  I've always been under the impression that  you could get a ticket for not having the stuff you listed.
