Re: obp report #3 and some for the hunters

Ken,

I used to live in SE Ct. If you get a chance, go to Watch Hill Rhode Island. There is an area between Watch Hill Lighthouse and a place called Napatree Point that is great for yak fishing. Take a walk down the Lighthouse road and scope it out first. When you get to the gate at the end of the road for the lighthouse, there will be a rock jetty to the right. High tide at sunset off of those rocs with a bomber popper will get you a hook up on a fat striper. If you have cleats(the only way to fish these rocks) walk out on the jetty with a fly rod and throw a white deciever along the rocks and hang on! Where you are in  Old Lyme/Niantic are you are 1 hr from the Narraganset bay in Rhode Island as well. One hell of a great fishing area. Tog, flounder, BIG stripers and chopper blues. Right now you should be able to score with 7 - 12 # blues.

Going the other way South on 95, I am not sure of access but look up Rivers End Tackle in Old Saybrook. They may be able to help with this one, ask about access to Cornfield Point in Old Saybrook and let them know you have a yak. The fishing off of this area and the rips produce some really great stripers, gator blues and huge tog.

The mouth of the Ct River from Old Lyme to Old Saybrook is great for flounder. The currents can get REALLY nasty though so check with a local bait shop. On the way there (Rt. 156) should be a place called the Black Hall River and Black Hall marina used to have a bait shop with knowledgable people running it. They may be able to clue you in to some better fishing.

If you do not feel like traveling too far, Right on Rt 156 under the train bridge in Niantic bay at night with eels on an outgoing tide or on the inside with the same will produce great fish. I scored a 44" striper from shore on the rocks under the train bridge on an eel during a fall run. That night 4 over 40" came up with the guys that were fishing there.

If you want a little different day, Go to Rhode Island (30 - 40 minute trip) and Right on Rt 1 in Westerly R.I. at the Benny's (in a place called Dunn's Corners) you can get an out of state 2 week clamming permit for around $15 bucks. The best place would be at Quononchataug salt pond. Great place for taking the family and, yakking for flounder and stripers as well.

Hope this helps you a little with a few more places to check out.

Mike
