19 July...Early PM

Talked to an Ol' Timer friend that gave me a tip....so I tried a place I have not fished in several years. I ended the evening with 4...25"+ Pups & 3...4-5lb  Greys.......The Pups were on the backside of Bay Island & the Greys were in a hole to the west on the edge of the channel. Haven't seen ANY yakkers back there at all, but seen plenty of fish.

Re: 19 July...Early PM

Eastern tip by the sand hill, several humps & holes back that way. Hasn't produced back there like it used to, but looks as if this year might see a few in that surrounding area. Got off the phone just a while ago and there seems to be some fish over around Broad Bay Point cove. I think the slow down in bulkhead building has helped the places back there.....Looks good so far........HINT: "Fresh" Peeler Crab

Re: 19 July...Early PM

That's awesome!  Did you take any pictures?  Since you are new here, I can show you how to post them.  I sure would like to see pictures of 5 lb grey trout from Lynnhaven.

Re: 19 July...Early PM

5 lb. hell I'd like to see a 2 lb. Grey from back there, especially this time of year. The last Greys that I caught or saw caught in the Lynnhaven were from under the Lesner bridge about 4-5  yrs. ago during the spring run and they were in the 5-10 lb. class with a few that went even bigger.

I was in that same area Sat A/M and didn't see but one other Yaker on a Hobie going west up Long Creek when I was going east and he said it had slowed down quite a bit in the last few days so I didn't fish much in that area. I did try at the S/E end of Bay Island where it opened up into Broad Bay with some frozen peelers on a Pup rig at the same time I was throwing a Gulp/Gudgeon on a lead-head but no love.

Tom, you 'fishing' again ??

Re: 19 July...Early PM

The last decent run of greys I saw was at HRBT and it was around the same timeframe, 4-5 years ago.  Calvin caught one about 30" out of my boat and me and the other guy caught some that were 4-5 lbs.  Last spring there were a ton of them at HRBT but most were 16"-20", although Forrest got a 26"er.  I'm with you Jay, I'd love to catch a 2lb one.

Like I said in my first post, I fished back there on a tip. I hadn't fished that area in several years. There are quite a few places along Long Creek and a couple over by the NEW great neck bridge that hold both Greys & Specks, but the Greys have been pretty rare to find. The Pups actually surprised me cause I was expecting to find just the trout, but they helped round out a successful tip-off trip. All fish were released, so they should still be hanging around.
