Elizabeth River 7/30 weird fish report! Can't say I didn't catch 'jack'

With the good ER report I decided to head out there.  The wind was supposed to be down but ooooooooooooh no, 15kts+.  I couldn't fish the area I wanted so I never got anything to take home.  I say I can't say I didn't catch 'jack' because I caught a 16" crevalle jack.  That's something I've never seen in the river before!

The other weird thing was being surrounded by a school of ribbonfish.  They were jumping all around me.  I caught one but could have caught alot more if I had tossed out a small Kastmaster or something like that (don't know why I would want to.  I've caught one of these monster looking things in the same area.

Stupid weird fish.  The crevalle jack fought pretty hard, I thought it was a bluefish until I got it up beside the boat.

Thanks for the report bud ,that solidifies the decision of going to Lynnhaven today after work. At least you didn't catch the 'skunk' !!

I've seen reports in the past of 10 lb. Jacks caught in the ditch before so they're not uncommon to the ER

Good catch, haven't caught a ribbonfish since I lived in Texas. When they showed, the speck fishing would shut down. Nasty teeth on them.

That's crazy!   Is this a sample of  "Global Warming"?  As a kid I used to catch these fish all along the reefs of Guam.  Sometimes it would be with just a shiny hook and a piece of surgical glove.

That's funny Tom,  I caught a baby Crevalle Jack on a Sabiki rig Saturday in Lynnhaven it was only about 6". I didn't know they were common around here.

Ive caught 3 in Lynnhaven. One on a sabiki, one I snagged, and one in the cast net. At first I though they might have been pompano but seeing that pic im sure the were crevalle. All mine were under 8". I bet that was quite the fight.

Hey Tom, Sorry I didn't get down there but when the wind and rain came up in Suffolk I figured the river would be a little rough. I fished the evening of the 30th for bait and just did about an hour or so of casting just outside the creek mouth. I caught 3 small pups but not jacks or ribbonfish. I've also had friends catch them at the ditch. There is plenty over there for them to eat. I scored a flounder and a shark yesterday in OV. I may do an AM run over to the other creek and piers on the flood tide this weekend.

I've caught them in Rudee hook & line, along with a banded rudderfish that was 16". I've caught a snowy grouper in my cast net, there... at Lynnhaven, I got a cuttlefish in my cast net... those things are friggin' WEIRD.

That's the great thing about fishing, you never know what you'll pull up.
