Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk
Modified By Yakkingaway on 8/24/2008 5:52:09 PM)

Sunday report.  Went out late morning and returned about 4PM..  Little slow but did get a couple of nice Specks.  One about 19.5 inches the other about 21 inches.  Both released to tell their story and be around later.  Both were taken on pink and white curly tails.  Trolling.  Nothing I could do sitting still throwing to them to save my butt.  Fed a lot of croaker some of my gulps. Made sure the hook was big enough that I wouldn't be bothered by them. Or, if I was bothered by them it would be worth it.  Frying pan zero.  Fish two.

Good job on the specks, we could have used them at the weigh in yesterday.

Re: Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk

Carl, you need to learn how to type.  You meant to type 'South Norfolk'.  Carl lives over off Poindexter and launches by the Jordan Bridge.  There are some oyster beds near there where the speckled trout hang out this time of year.

Oh yeah, damn.  I keep forgetting where I live....     my baaaad.  It's 'half-hymers'.   I'll come out of it soon.     I've got to learn how to fix trout so that I like em.

Re: Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk

My wife breads them and bakes them and then a little lemon juice when they come out.  Pretty good.   Or you could cut them in strips, beer batter and deep fry em.  Oh yeah, another fun thing to do with the bigger ones is steak em like you would a wahoo or shark.

Re: Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk

How do you get the 'Elizabeth River' taste out of them?

Re: Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk

The ER taste is because they come prepackaged in cooking oil....or is that Bunker-C?  You know you can stuff them in you gas tank and get about 50mpf (miles per fish)!

Re: Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk

Just an FYI to eveyone that fishes the Elizabeth. I work on the river right where the main river branches off into the eastern and southern branches and we've had the algea bloom AKA 'Red Tide' in our part of the river for the better part of 3-4 wks. now, just like last year about this time. That unfortunately is not the issue. The issue is this morning there was a mini fish kill around both our ship yard and the METRO yard that is right next door. There were lots of dead Glass minnows, 4-6" Menhaden, 2-5" Flounder and even some 12-24" Stripers all belly up or on the surface barely living for who knows how much longer. I'm guessing that it's related to the algea which is robbing the water of oxygen but I'm no marine biologist, just a guy that's worked on the river for the last 30 yrs and hasn't seen this happen until now.

Re: Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk

Hey knot crazy,

How recent was the fish kill?  Some fisheries biologists I work with at ODU are trying to get samples of fish effected by this bloom.

Cheers,

Chris B.

Re: Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk

Chris the fish kill was first noticed yesterday when I posted by myself and the guys I work with. There are still dead fish floating in the river and the Gulls are loving it so I'm not sure how much longer 'samples' will be available. I didn't notice any new fish that might have recently (today) died but I have also noticed a TON of Blue crabs that are staying closer to the top of the water column, so much so that they seem to be crowding out each other to stay on top. I'm just guessing again but I believe it's because the oxygen levels are so low deeper down towards the river bottom they choose to stay on top.

Let me know if you guys find anything, inquiring minds you know.

Re: Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk

Some people from our lab sampled the dissolved oxygen over there this morning and it is pretty low.  If not today definitely tomorrow some people will be coming by to try and get samples.  They are specifically interested in menhaden since they are filter feeders and would have probably consumed the most red tide.

Concerning the red tide.....the algae in question is called Cochlodinium polykoides (or something like that).  Though it doesn't emit a toxin it does ooz out a slime that clogs fish and shellfish gills.  It mostly effects juvenile fish that can't get away but larger fish can definitely be effected when the dissolved oxygen drops (after the algae start to die).

Also thanks for the heads up on this....we saw it last week scattered all the way from Little Creek up to the Ghost Fleet on the James.  The smell from it was almost enough to make me gag when we were loading our boat at the NOAA docks.

Cheers,

Chris

Re: Elizabeth River - Port Norfolk

I didn't see anything in the Western Branch the last couple days but I did see some gulls feasting on something this morning.  The red tide is dying though, I believe.  I'm not seeing any in the water.  That would explain why this is happening as Chris explains it.  However, there have been a few fish that were more interested in eating than dying.
