June 9th, DEQ Public Hearing on the Proposed Indigo Dunes Development
The Department of Environmental Quality will hold a hearing on Monday, June 9th, at 6:30 PM regarding the proposed Indigo Dunes development. This is for JPA#2 and not JPA#1 which is in litigation in City of Virginia Beach vs. VMRC. The formal hearing starts at 7:30 PM, but the informal part starts at 6:30 PM. The informal part will include a presentation on the draft permit, a possible presentation by the applicant and a question and answer period. All attendees will be able to submit questions in writing during the question and answer period. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to speak during the hearing. In addition, written comments can be submitted to DEQ anytime up 4:00 PM on June 24, 2008. The hearing will be held at the local office of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, 5636 Southern Boulevard, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Written comments may be sent to the same address or submitted by fax, 757-518-2009.
June 14th River Clean-Up, 9:00 AM - Noon
On Saturday, June 14th, we will be doing our regular clean-up on London Bridge Creek at the Hutton Circle Canoe/Kayak Launch. All are welcome. Bring your canoe or kayak or partner with a friend. Rain Barrel Workshop, Saturday, June 14th
This is a reminder to those who are signed up for this workshop to meet at Cape Henry School on Mill Dam Road at 10:30 on Saturday morning---follow the signs to the correct entrance. And make sure you will be able to transport your barrel home after the workshop. This workshop is full. · Reducing Runoff in the Watershed - June 17, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm – A half day workshop focusing on runoff in our local watersheds and how it can be reduced, including information on the Chesapeake Bay and how to set up a rain barrel to reduce runoff at your school.
· Going Green: An Introduction Model to Involve Students in Community and Educational Projects – June 19, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm – In this half day program, follow the successes of two local schools and explore “Going Green” with your students through resources available on starting a River Keepers program.
Oyster Gardener Float Workshop
Mark your calendar. We will be holding our first Taylor Float Workshop on Tuesday, July 8th, 6:00-7:30 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1968 Woodside Lane off Adam Keeling Road. Come and help us build floats for oyster gardeners or build your own float. All the materials will be provided and precut. If you want to build your own float, the cost of the materials will be $75. It will be a fun evening doing a little light construction work and helping us to expand the oyster gardening program for oyster restoration in the Lynnhaven River.
