Richmond catfish
So I left work a little early and went again Wednesday afternoon. Went to the nearby office park pond and caught about 10 bluegill and got in the river by 5:45pm. I was at my first spot for about 15 minutes and had no bumps. I moved to my second spot and in 5 minutes I had a fish on. It ripped drag for about 10 seconds (NOT an exaggeration). All the while, I'm trying to reel in my other 2 other rods I had out and pull in my anchor. After that I paddled right over him and pretty much just got dragged around. Oh by the way, I failed to mention that this was all on 4lb test line. My boss got me to join a club he was a member of. It's called the Virginia Angler's Club (VAC) and they're all about catching the biggest fish on the lightest line possible. So I had 2 4lb test lines and a 6lb test line out there and was hooked up with a monster catfish on 4lb. I fought that fish for an hour and forty five minutes. I'm not exaggerating. I even smoked a cigarette and talked on the phone while fighing this fish. Here comes the sad part. I didn't even get to see it. He dragged me up river, down river, side to side.... every time I thought I was getting a good amount o' line in, he would rip more line out. Eventually the twists in me line coming from a spinning reel, combined with extreme tension over time, snapped me line. I literally screamed "NO!!!!!!!" and sat there broken hearted. My two other lines that I pulled in during that fight still had baits swimming around on them. So I threw them in while still sulking in me defeat. By now it was getting dark and I knew if I hooked into something like the last one I was going to be out there for a while. With in a couple o' minutes I hook into something that felt like a little one but as I was pulling it in, it took off ripping drag for a couple of seconds. This time it was on me 6lb test and pulled this lad in under ten minutes. Photobucket Photobucket 24lb 1oz flathead catfish on 6lb test in under 10 minutes. Can you imagine what the other one woulda been? I got to work this morning and my boss tells me I need to get a baitcaster cuz the line won't twist like on a spinning reel. Next time.

Re: Richmond catfish

Nice!  Do you ever go after the blue cats below the city?  I used to take my boat out and catch them and would like to give it a try in the kayak.  If you want some company next time you go, let me know! -Chad

Re: Richmond catfish
Lately I've just been down at Pony Pasture. During the shad run I'll be at Anncarrow's and sometimes I'll go out of Hopewell.

Re: Richmond catfish

You feel like going tomorrow afternoon to Pony Pasture?  I've never fished it from a kayak and it would be great to get some tips on some holes out there.  I could get some bait from a pond near me if that would help.

Re: Richmond catfish
I'm actually gonna be at work for a while tomorrow. There's a big meeting @ 5:00. Maybe over the weekend. I'll let you know. By the way, do you know of any decent ponds in Richmond to fish for bass?

Re: Richmond catfish
Not anything super hot. My old landlord had a pond that was great except it was 30 feet across the whole thing... tiny... My parents just moved from a place with two great ponds and now I can't fish them... Seems like I am running out of places to go...

Re: Richmond catfish
One of my favorite spots for flatheads on the James is halfway between the Huguenot launch and Bosher's Dam. As you paddle up river from the launch you will pass a rocky area just before a bend to the right. As you proceed around the bend, watch your fishfinder - the river drops off to about 15' deep. It's a long, deep, quiet section spanning almost the width of the river. Fish up to thirty pounds cruise the area (so do huge gar). Another good bet on a hot day is Bosher's Dam itself. Paddle up to within thirty feet, turn facing down current, and anchor on a long rope. Fish your bream using a sliding 2oz. egg weight. You can feel your bait get nervous as the catfish approaches; suddenly he's moving away at a steady five miles an hour....
