New River Shuttle?
Modified By beachflies on 8/17/2008 10:47:42 AM)

Anyone have any experience with kayak shuttle ("livery") services along the New River (the Virginia portion)?  The few outfitters I've found only shuttle their own boats -- claiming it's a liability insurance issue.  I have some doubts about that, but it's their business; they get to make the rules.  And speaking of the New, anyone have some tried and true fly-rod tactics for the muskies said to lurk in some stretches?

Thanks.

Re: New River Shuttle?

I have several friends around here that do a bicycle shuttle.  You drop off your kayak and gear at the launch site, drive to your take out and then ride your bike back to your launch and chain it to a tree.  Pick up the bike on the ride home.

Re: New River Shuttle?

A bike shuttle would be OK for a short day trip, perhaps.  (Though it would likely whip me good given the infrequency of my bike riding and the hilly terrain.)  I am thinking about a long one-day or even two-day drift.  Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Re: New River Shuttle?

Goby, I guess that means you have to peddle uphill since the river runs downhill.

Re: New River Shuttle?

Donnie Turner runs "Blue Cat on the New" and provides shuttling.  He will drive you on both the Ivanhoe-Austinville stretch and Foster Falls-Allisonia, which are above the lake.  Great smallmouth fishing.  http://www.bluecatonthenew.com/  .  Donnie is a great guy.  If you decide to use him, tell 'em Harry from Richmond sent you . . . it will get you a beer for the ride home!  ;-)
