What the Hell Did I Catch?
Went out around 5 AM Friday morning, worked the CBBT, then the Lesner with Jim, and then picked every canal, cove, dock and cove including the tennis courts, and finally just got tired of seeing the rod flinch with lil buggers nibblin at my gulp shrimp. (finally realized the shrimp are more blue fish durable than the gupy/minnow gulp) So Jim decided to drift fish the "Gut" behind Bruce Smith's house, and I dropped anchor and a gulp. All of a sudden my kayak almost flipped over and my rod bent over under the pressure of whatever the heck was pulling, being stuck in the rod holder in my "tarpon". After ditching the anchor, and being pulled a good distance in giant arcs, Jim stopped by, just to see what the heck could be pulling a kayak against chop and wind a good distance. This lasted for a good 15-25+ minutes, I tried winching in whatever was on the end of my line. The "thing" would run, then rest at the bottom for 5 minutes, then run and strip my spool on a kayak dragging run, to only stop and repeat the process. Finally, and Sadly, by 50Lb TEST leader swivel gave out and snapped. Anyone have a clue as to what the heck I was hooked to? I've caught plenty of skates from surf, boats, and piers, and no skate fought as hard or awkward as this "thing". At points for sure I thought i was hooked on a oyster bar, only to have my reel for screaming... Preplexed.....

That would be a ray, probably a cownose.  Plenty of them back there and when you hook up with one, hold on.  Your fight story is classic ray behavior.  If you're bored, they put up a helluva fight as you saw.

Another thread has people eating them, but I've never tried.  Be glad your line broke...they are not fun to get a hook out of and, as you saw, can be very aggressive for long periods of time.

Sounds like a cownose... you don't wanna have anything to do with those guys... fun fight for sure. I watched my buddy get dragged from the oysters near Marker 8 almost to the tennis courts by one of those bastards... this was against a strong outgoing tide and decent wind. He swears it's the funnest, and craziest "fish" he's ever caught, I personally don't wanna have anything to do with the damn things.

Thats the conclusion a few of the guys out today with me were coming up with. I'm just trying to imagine how big that thing must of been. Ditto on the whole, not getting to meet it face to face, Thought of Steve Irwin came to mind while I was fighting that thing. (...too soon?)
