Suggestions for GPS and Fish/Depth Finders

I'm sure this question has came up more than a few times but since I'm finally thinking about taking the plung into getting the yak teched out I was wondering if anyone can help me with the following.

1. What model/features should I be looking for in a fish/depth finder for the yak?  Any suggestions?

2. What model/features should I be looking for in a handheld GPS? Any suggestions?

Thanks

-Ryan

Re: Suggestions for GPS and Fish/Depth Finders

FinsUpVA recommended the Eagle Cuda 168. He is right on the money with that suggestion. $75.00, easy to read/see on a sunny day, perfect for kayak fishing. I got mine at Gander Mountain. Did I mention cheap? As for the GPS, I'm still a map/chart compass guy. I use a GPS for work, but I cheat and back myself up with a map. Give FinsUpVA a few days, then ask for his wisdom. I just read his last post and I had to break out the eye drops to put out the fire. I think someone plucked his last nerve.

I am in the same boat... looking for a nice handheld GPS unit...

Can those 99 dollar garmins do the trick or do you need a full blown marine style GPS?

Don't even think of a Magellan product for a handheld. They SUCK!!

for the gps, I would go with a lowrance H2O, with the marine chip, 100 dollars for the unit, another 95 for the chip, very user friendly, easy to read, with a decent size screen ....

but for the bottom/fishfinder... you do get what you paid for! I highly recommend the garmin 300C or the eagle fisheasy 320C ( both colored ) it can determine hard or soft bottom, vegetation, rocks, boulders, etc.,I fish mostly structure salt or freshwater, and it really helps out having a better FF, it makes a WHOLE LOT OF DIFFERENCE especially  fishing around unknown waters! both FF are so sesnsitve to the point that you can see your lure and line going through the water!

BTW ....both of the units sell for just over 200 dollars

Re: Suggestions for GPS and Fish/Depth Finders

oopps. Gues I kind of dropped the ball on reading this one. Rbentley was correct in recommending the eagle unit(division of Lowerance). Keep it simple. The fishfinder is best to be used as a bottom/contour finder. At least for me. At $70-$80 you can't go wrong. As far as GPS unit I agree with OVYaker and the Lowerance H2O is great. Really nice if you spent the extra $99 and get the Nav. chip. Hope this helps.
