I think I just f%$#^d up my boat--need a plastic welder

There's a reason there have been only 2 modifications in 4 years.  I suck. Naturally, it's an old boat (2005 Tarpon 160--the one with the hatches) made of HDPE, harder to come by from what I've been told. Trying to put a zig-zag cleat on for an anchor trolly, not sure what happened. Maybe the Marine Goop melted the HDPE some. Maybe the stupid f%$^#$g wellnuts didn't catch. Maybe it was a bad placement from the get go. Either way, the area by my left knee inside the cockpit felt level before hand, now it seems raised a hair with the center of this cleat as the peak. The edges of the cleat seemed to be out in mid air. The wellnuts don't seem to be secure. So I put a butt-ton of goop under it and put some weight on it, trying to make it wtaertight if not useful--I'll never trust it, I know that already.

Of course, now my plans for the weekend, for the Family Event, and for the 23rd are all in jeopardy.

So...If anyone has a plastic welder and knows how to fix this, I would GREATLY appreciate your help. My number is 450-7051.

Re: I think I just f%$#^d up my boat--need a plastic welder

Realizing pretty much everyone would have some sort of plans with the beautiful weather, I looked to the web. One option seemes to be cutting cleaned yogurt cups or other HDPE material (looke on the bottom of the container) into 1/2" strips, lighting them on fire, then letting the plastic drip into the hole. Sounds ugly, but it's an ugly boat anyway. I'll try this tonight.

The other option involves flexible auto body repair kit from NAPA or wherever. Not sure of this as it uses a different material that doesn't bond...

Well, the goop never dried, so I pulled the clamp off to see the damage. Not good, but not as bad as it could be. The plastic parts if the wellnuts adhered, but something happened witht the nuts themselves and the plastic looks puckered. I think I'm just going to try screws from extra  wellnuts with a touch of goop to seal this up. Wx depending, I've got a long paddle for some fish planned for tomorrow. I'll keeep you posted.

Thx for reading.

Boat held up to a two-hour paddle. However, no joy.

Seems like every time I use wellnuts the dang things don't hold.  I just use GOOP and rivets nowadays.  Glad you got the yak in the water; it should be ok.  If you can access the interior area where you put the cleat, maybe you could spray that down with spray foam?  At least then you don't have to worry about sinking if the patch fails.

No access, it's almost directly in the center. I think it'll be ok, but you never know. I may bug Cory when he returns until he agrees to weld it. LOL.

I can weld it for you. I just came across this post or I would have answered sooner. I can get the material as well if you need it. Gimme a call if you still need it fixed.

It seems to be holding, but it's ugly. I'd be happy to have you take a look at it and see what you think.

I've got bigger problems with the seals on my hatches.
