Idea for livewell pump

I recently encountered issues with transporting large live bait. I had a baitsaver setup in my 5 gallon pail which recirculates the contained water via a spraybar. Works real good until the battery dies, so you have to carry a significant supply of small 12v batteries or a large one (weight factor)

While I have not built this, I found a pump for cheap on Ebay (item#110278330238) It is a 3gpm 12v submersible pump rated for fresh and salt water. It is tiny, and will fit in a toilet tissue tube with room to spare. I got it for $12.65 to put in my campers water tank to eliminate the hand pump on the sink. Thinking yesterday about my bait troubles, I wanted to build a better mouse trap. This pump is small enough to mount through a scupper hole. Mounted just deep enough, it could supply a new supply of water to the bait tank. The bait tank coule have a hole in its side to maintain the specified water level while fresh water is added. 3 gallons of water a minute is a lot, so you will probably want to cycle this operation as needed. I do not know how long these pumps will be available at this experimental price, and I have seen them listed for $45-70 online. I wanted to give the do it yourselfer a heds up should you be interested in this idea. I am going to look for an interval timer that runs on 12v that would make an automatic operation of the water change. I will post a heads up should I come up with something.

Good Luck

Re: Idea for livewell pump

FYI,

I wanted to give a heads up on this. This is a great submersible pump, but it wont be accommodated by all kayak scupper holes. it will fit the X-Factor, but not my prowler Big Game. you still have the option of hanging it over the side. I chose to buy a Rigrite livewell timer from Bass Pro to cycle the pump and save my battery. I took a piece of flexible poly tubing and coupled it with a qwik connect. to make a loop which I drilled to make a spraybar. I took this loop and mounted it to the upper perimeter of a 5 gallon bucket with cable ties that I mounted through drilled holes in the bucket. The qwik connect on the spraybar loop is a T , and the opposing threaded fitting is mounted through the bucket via a drilled hole, and attatches to the pump via a tube which lowers it down to the scupper hole. The exhaust for the bucket is merely a hole drilled in the side of the pail which keeps a constant level. i am looking for an apron to mount around the pail to hold the battery, control and wiring. i have seen some gardening and fishing aprons that attatch to pails, but i will shop a little before choosing something. I will post a picture when I have completed this. Even though there are dozens out there, it is rewarding making one you can call your own.

Re: Idea for livewell pump

You might try a 6V battery to slow down the pump.  Hobie uses a 6V in their live bait tank.  I pulled one out of a cheap spotlight :  battery and charger for under $10.  Don't know how long t will last running a pump yet.
