Night Fishing Necessities

I've never been fishing at night.  I was wondering what other supplies are a good idea to take along.

Re: Night Fishing Necessities
The regular safety supplies such as a VHF, PFD, first aid kit, dry set of clothes, etc. are always a good idea and some such as a PFD are required. As far as night fishing goes I'm pretty sure your required to have some type of 360 degree light such as a stern light that you'll see on many rigged yaks. The most important things for night fishing I would say would be..... 1. A float plan (tell someone where you plan on fishing and what time you plan on getting on and off the water) 2. A compass or gps to keep your bearings if there are no physical or geographical reference points 3. 360 degree stern light 4. A head light so you can see what your doing 5. If possible I always try and have a fishing buddy. It's always a good idea, especially if your fishing at night for the first time and or your unfamiliar with fishing a body of water in the dark. Hope this helps.

I'd also say be up on your self survival skills; if you go in the water at night you might be there a looong time otherwise.

Carry multiple lights and a whistle; the whistle is good for getting the attention of a drunk idiot in a powerboat who's not paying any attention and is about to run you over.

Yep, noise making device such as a whistle. Thanks, left that one out.

Other than the stuff you need during the day I'd say a head lamp is a must, and a bright light for your stern.  I use a regular boat anchor light (stern) on a 36" pole, you can buy one from West Marine and modify it to zip tie it to your crate.  Other kayakers have been known to joke on me for my super bright light but every boater I come in contact with tells me they wish all kayakers had a light like that so they could see em.  I used the 'flashlight' type for a year or so and then got tired of it not working or having to replace the batteries every two trips.  Get a 12 volt and a charger.    You can get one like this at Batteries Plus:batteryWerkerkayak.jpg picture by wpvboat

Other than that you need a map to the HRBT but we won't be talking about that online much longer .  It's dead there now but all we need is a tiny bit of cool weather........

Re: Night Fishing Necessities

I used to use the Scotty-based light available from KayakFishingStuff, but friends that I've fished with told me they couldn't see me at a distance. Then, I discovered this light:

A little expensive, but well worth it.

Re: Night Fishing Necessities

I can confirm that orlowskr's light is super bright.  I also have the Scotty light and am getting ready right now to go buy a different one that I feel safe with.  The Scotty just doesn't put out enough light for me.

Re: Night Fishing Necessities
The original Scotty light was stuck into a rubber cup riveted to the end of a metal rod. The other end of the rod had a male Scotty plug. The TekTite light fits snugly in the same rubber cup just like the Scotty light; I added a short piece of cord to tie it off so I wouldn't lose it when I needed it the most.
Then, I decided to get a little fancy. I made a light staff out of one leg of an old camera tripod. Now the height is adjustable to about four feet, keeping the light well above my head so that it is unobstructed by my silhouette.
