Another Fishfinder Question

Finally got my fishfinder mounted (Garmin 300c) and took it out for a test run in the Backriver Sunday. This is my first fishfinder so I'm not really sure what to expect as far as performance goes. It seemed to be taking accurate depth readings but never really seemed to be marking anything in the water column. When it did seem to be marking something (I think it was floating seaweed?) it would show up as straight vertical lines. My buddy tried sticking his paddle under the hull to see if it picked it up, but nothing showed up on the screen. I also tried doing the same thing by floating a Redfish Magic under where the transducer is and still did not pick up anything. It seemed to read well in anything above two feet but below that the whole screen would get red and go a little erratic. From what I understand and have seen on the unit in the store the signatures will show up as "arcs" in the water column but I never saw anything that registered in an arc shape. If there were air bubbles between the transducer how would this be indicated by the performance? Another thing to note is that for the most part we were only fishing in 3-7 ft of water. I just want to make sure it's working properly and to it's fully potential before I completely cover it with Lexel. Thanks, -Ryan

Chances are you weren't marking fish bc there weren't any down there to mark. They all go blank below 2'. In 3'-7' of water you will rarely mark anything. The fish would have to be sitting right under you and they aren't likely to stick around with you hovering just above. I've been out in shallow water like that and caught a bunch of fish and never marked any. The ff will be more useful for marking fish in 10' minimum. For shallower water it is just nice to know the depth and find the drop offs.

Yeah I was kinda wondering if that was the problem, but it seemed weird to me that when we waved a paddle under the boat and I floated a lure under the boat that nothing showed up. I mean other than the fact that I'm not seeing any arcs on the screen it seems to be working fine unless I was in water 2' or less. While researching FF I came across the youtube video from kayakfishingstuff.com and the dude was saying to not push the transducer all the way down to the hull after filling the foam cut out with lexel and to just let it "float". To me this would be asking for air bubbles between the transducer and the hull. I pressed mine down. Hard. And then filled a ziplock freezer bag filled with water and put it on top of the assembly over night to weigh it down and let it set up. Regardless if it was working or not it must have been good luck because I finally got into my first nice bunch of reds this season. Thanks again.
