transducer mounting ?
I have new humminbird 383 and want to mount a shoot thru the hull transducer on a tarpon 120.

My question is:

the bottom of my yak is dinged, scratched and scraped will this cause a problem?

are there any other options to mounting one if the above is a problem?

Re: transducer mounting ?

Shoot through the hull should work well, as long as there is no ar trapped between the transducer and the fish you are trying to find, the sonar signal is lost in air.  Use marine goop or epoxy, rough up the inside with sandpaper (to make the goop stick) and stick the ducer in with ease, so not to trap any air under it.  Put a weight on it to hold in place till goop dries, and you should be all set.  As far as the scratches, as long as they are in water, no air should be trapped in them, so no problems!

Re: transducer mounting ?

Float, no problems with the scratches.  My yak has more scratches than I've seen and I don't have any problems!  Just follow Linstad's directions and you will be good to go.

Re: transducer mounting ?
I just put one in mine and what you've been told is correct.  I used Lexel...seems to be the choice for this type of install. I also went a step further and cut a a mold from some thick "pool noodle"  type material (it's actually really heavy duty packing foam) and used that as a base to hold the transducer.  It also offers some protection.  I cut out a piece all the way through in the exact shape of the transducer, glued that down with lexel and then filled in the "hole" with additional lexel and pressed the transducer into that.  Did put weight on it while it dried and also have wedged a piece of pool noodle (probably not necessary) down to keep it in place.  It ain't going anywhere. If you need a piece of this stuff for the mold, post up and I'll bring a piece.  It also makes good packing for your battery box to keep it snug.  BTW, this was not my original idea....vaaykfisherman deserves credit on this one. (and I'm sure lots of other folks have used this technique)

Re: transducer mounting ?

Honesty, here is how I did mine:

1)  Scuff up the spot in hull with sandpaper and blow dust off.

2)  Squirt a big pile of GOOP in the spot.

3)  Stick transducer in GOOP.

4)  Let it dry for 48 hours and you are good to go.

I had my last one in for 18 months and beat the crap out of it inside and out.  When I got the new ff I had a bitch of a time getting the last one off so it works!

Good luck.

Re: transducer mounting ?

If you use a foam base to act as a dam for your transducer, then you can deflate one of those big  xercise balls (or even a beach ball) and then put it in the boat and pump it back up and leave it until it cures. This works especially well on boats that have a V-hull and no real flat spot to mount the base (some people call it a dam). It will mold the base to the shape of the hull and help ensure no air bubble get in. After it cures, deflate the ball, fill the hole with lexel, insert transducer, cover the rest of the way with lexel and let cure, it is ready to fish the next day.

So what I'm getting out of this is that you can mount the transducer in the "V" of the hull, as would be the case for a Ride 135 since there are no "flat spots" to mount it, as long as the goop/lexel or whatever you use takes the shape of the V and makes a solid air free connection between the transducer and the hull. So I'm assuming the V shape on the outside of the hull makes no difference in the signal? Is it true that Lexel promotes better temp readings? If so is there a reason for this?

Re: transducer mounting ?

The "V" doesn't matter; however, make sure that you mount your transducer completely horizontal (to the water surface) otherwise you will have skewed fish arches. You may try making a little dammed area out of modeling clay, fill with your choice of adhesive, then insert the transducer to dry.

Lexel, Goop, construction adhesive, concrete, wattle & daub, it's your choice. All work well provided there is no trapped air bubbles. Color of adhesive is irrelevant; if it were, the color of your kayak would determine the quality of the signal.

You'll never get a completely accurate temperature, but you'll have a good idea if you cover your transducer in the adhesive you use. The heat transfer from water to hull to adhesive to transducer will be more accurate if it's not measuring the temperature of the inside of the boat; hence it is insulated from the hull air by a conductive layer.

Hey Joe - how's New England?

Re: transducer mounting ?
Yeah I was thinking about maybe using some type of clay for that purpose. Thanks for the explanation about the temperature. That makes sense.
