Wachapreague This weekend

Hi,

I know its a little last minute but im makin a trip up to wachapreague on the eastern shore this weekend with my dad. He's going to bringing the big boat and probably be going outside the inlet, i thought that since he gets tierd easily now that he's getting older, after fishing from the big boat in the morings, i'll have most of the late afternoon till dark  to fish out of my kayak (12' 6" Liquid Logic Mantaray). I'm sure people fish around there with their yaks, but im not sure what to fish for other than croaker and spot. I know of a couple good flounder spots but they are a bit far for a paddle, and im only planning on fishing the grasses all along the channel a few miles out from the marina. Does anyone know what else I could catch and with what, maybe some trout with a gulp or even a puppy drum. Any help is greatly appreciated and again sory for such a late notice.

Thanks,

 Nick

Re: Wachapreague This weekend

Nick,

I've spent a fair amount of time fishing out of Wachapreague, but never from my kayak.  Croaker and the occasional trout, and of course flounder, are probably your best bet.  As far as the redfish are concerned, I'm not aware of any being caught in the backwaters up there, albeit larger drum can be caught around the inlet.  If I were you, assuming the weather cooperates, I would paddle to the right leaving town and then after a few hundred yards go right again into the bay.  If you follow the channel markers across the bay you'll eventually enter the narrower channels through the grass again.  I've had luck with croaker there (where the bay dumps into the narrow channel and the next channel market to the east) as well as that general vicinity along the east side of that bay.  It's a stiff paddle, but that's probably where I'd try.  You could also try fishing along the North edge of the bay working your way east.  That will eventually take you to the same spot I mention above.  Good luck.

Mike

Re: Wachapreague This weekend

Thanks Mike,

I just got home this morning and it was awesome trip! I paddled across that bay to the grasses but I only caught two croakers about 13 inches long. I trolled a gulp pearl white accross the channel and had two bites were in both cases the tails were cut right up to the hook, im thinking it was bluefish by the looks of the cut. Even though I didnt catch many fis on my Yak, just paddling out there and around the marsh was an awesome sight. On the big boat, we went out to the inlet and caught a bunch of throw back flounders all around 17" and 18" and we also caught the biggest butterfly ray i have ever seen. It took about an hour to get it to the boat on 30lb line. When it finally came to the surface it was about 6ft wide and about 4 1/2ft front to back. Over all the trip was awesome, thanks for the info for the kayak.

Re: Wachapreague This weekend

Glad to hear it was a good trip despite the slow fishing from the kayak.  It seems like a tough place to fish from a kayak due to tide and distance to good fishing.  I'm sure there is some yet-to-be-discovered fishery there (they do catch specs in the creeks in the Sept/Oct and flounder are on the flats in April/May).  It's a beautiful place...have to be prepared for the flies though.
