Anyone up for an ODU reef trip on Aug 1? Never fished it but could use a few flats. I can get a mix of live bait (finger mullet, small spots & croaker). Where would be a good morning launch site?

Launch from the parking lot beside Ships Cabin Rest. It's on the right side and a decent parking lot.but a beach drag to launch so bring the wheels if you have them. Good luck,wish I could make it. Study up on your spanish, it's a latino beach.

I plan to hit the area on the morning of 7/29 and fish until mid-day or so and then head to lynnhaven for the afternoon and evening if the weather works out. I have not fished the reef this year so unknown if anything going on.

A friend informed me that season re-opens on the 31st not the 1st like i'd mistakenly written in the initial post. Can't let anyone get the jump on me so i'll be out there at 12:30am on the 31st. (just kidding).
Tim, i'll give you a call Wed. but will probably be in the water in the AM - you can call me on my cell and i'll give you a report that day - 757-285-3091.
btw -- Grommet, The posting on Tidalfish by CaptMike was the reason I instantly "have" to fish there. I use a VA redneck to English translator for all my postings.

We've used "Southern" labor for two years now and I've picked up a good amount of spanish--enough to hold a decent conversation, although my grammar and use of tense (past/present/future) sucks. I've lived in VB for 20 years and STILL don't understand redneck.

Good luck at the reef !! I haven't got the chance to fish it yet this season but want to. I've heard it's been good this year from quite a few others. A bottom machine is almost necessary and if you use the ramp Rick was talking about be careful and stay out of the middle of the entrance to the actual parking lot because it's soft sand and has swallowed a few vehicles that didn't have 4WD.

Weather is looking kind of iffy for tomorrow afternoon, so I'm taking off tomorrow. I'll call you later tonight to see what your plans are.

I'm on it for the AM. Some of my bait died - I think I had a few too many in the bucket. I still have enough to catch fish. I'm gonna bring the dead ones too, maybe some bluefish to strip. If I can really get on it in the AM I may try to throw the cast net a few times at a nearby boat ramp on - on the way.
I have the full set of GPS #s for the reef. I may even try to grab a few fiddler crabs in the am to see what else likes to hang around the concrete. See ya in the AM.

I got through the tubes today by 7:30 after a detour to catch more bait. Plugged in the GPS #s and carefully navigated out to the crowd and big yellow marker less than a mile away. Actually just 2 boats and Tim already there with 1 keeper in his cooler.
We caught a few under 18" and a few over. Tim was getting more action on his Jig than I was with the bait but he was covering more ground with his pedal-driven Hobie. I may have to get one of those. I anchored up most of the time today while I was anchored didn't catch a keeper flounder - I did however catch a 3-3.5' shark and a 1 lb croaker. Once I started drifting I finally caught a keeper.

you can usually catch some finger mullets around ships cabin, I'll be heading that way soon!
