Just a little help from my friends?

A friend and I have been going to York Town and fishing for Croakers the last few weeks. Wow the fishing was great…

But now we are thinking of going to go to Virginia Beach. I was in Green Top this past Sunday. One of the guys there said that the King Mackerel were running.

Well that is something we would like to try out but we are new at kayak fishing.

So here is the questions.

Where is the best place to go?

What to fish with? Live bate? Artificial? And how to rig it up.

Would someone would like to go with us?

Re: Just a little help from my friends?

My advice to you would be don't waste your time on kings.  No one in our club has caught one out of a kayak and we are talking about some serious anglers.  If you want to get on some hard pullage, I would recommend trying Lynnhaven for redfish.  There have been some nice fish in the 20"-30" with many in the upper 20's caught in there.  You can get details from some of the posts here or maybe someone will chime in if you think you want to try it out.  I just think if you go looking for kings you will get  a big fat SKUNK.  That's no fun.

Re: Just a little help from my friends?

In a former life, I fished for kings.  IMHO, a superb fish!  Good fight and excellent tablefare.  Best bait for me was a rigged ballyhoo, with a trailing hook and some kind of gaudy hula skirt over the front.  But, they prefer a fast-trolled bait  -- fast as in 10 knots or so.  Just doesn't lend itself to kayak fishing.

What about all those kings cought off piers? Trolling speed ZERO.

Re: Just a little help from my friends?

It happens.  In fact I think a once-upon-a-time Virginia record king was caught off the Little Island Pier.  Big cobia get caught from piers too.  But the ratio of fish caught to hours fished is poor, I'd say -- at least in our neck of the woods.
