Harkers Island Trip
For those of you that remember Flyyaker's post about Hitting Harkers Island and Cape Lookout for False Albies last year, we ended up going and it was a blast. So not wanting to let a good thing die this is my call to anyone who may be interested in the following: Heading down to Harkers Island/Cape Lookout/Shackleford Banks area for a kayaking/camping trip in hopes of catching some of those speedy migrating footballs called False Albicore. Right now im thinking about heading down there on Monday or Tues November 2nd, or 3rd and camping either on the "hook" on Cape Lookout or somewhere along Shackleford Banks until around that Thursday when I'm planning on meeting up with some buddies and staying in a house until Sunday. Flyyaker and I both got our first Albies on fly out of the yaks last year along with numerous other species (reds, trout, and even grouper to name a few). It's definitely an experience that should not be missed, but at the same time requires a good amount of "work" and extensive time on the water. It's a trip that needs planning so If anyone is interested post up or PM me and we'll talk.

Re: Harkers Island Trip

I'll already be down there Halloween weekend or I would take you up on it.  I'm gonna have to dust off the heavy fly rods for that trip I guess.

Cheers,

Chris

Sweet, well hope you get into em. There is a good article in the latest Fly Fishing In Salt Water where Brian Horsley talks about albie fishing down there. Post up and let me know how you do! Tight lines Ryan

Re: Harkers Island Trip

I am going to try and make it again this year. I got half way there last year and the ferries stopped running. I will be in touch.

Re: Harkers Island Trip

Is this a FLY FISHING ONLY venture? Will they take other types of offerings ?

Re: Harkers Island Trip
definitely not just a fly fishing venture only. They will certainly take conventional or spin offerings. Just about like anything else using conventional or spin gear makes it easier than flies but the reason it's such a big fly fishing event is 1. False Albies don't make good table fare and 2. Catching them on fly is a ton of fun. Not saying an Albie on any light tackle isn't fun, a guy we were camping with last year hooked up one that was blitzing the beach on light spin last year and got straight spooled....it was awesome! I'm definitely bringing a conventional and maybe a spin setup with me and maybe do some jigging. There are also a number of other species down there to hook into and even throw in the frying pan for one of the best camp suppers you've ever had! Come down! Just the experience is worth the trip!

is this a relatively easy launch and paddle?  I am a novice yakker but dang i miss the albies.  When they start and stop for the year.   I could definitiely use some shots at them, worik email is gregory.d.lewis@navy.mil  or my cel is 636-6495 if anyone can drop me some info on it.  Been way to long for me and albies from a yak would be a nice new twist.  - greg

Re: Harkers Island Trip

Hopefully I can get a camera by then and post some pictures.  I'm pretty darn excited about it.  As far as flies go I'm pretty set but I always bring my spinning rod.....any advice on lures for Albies???

Re: Harkers Island Trip

Thanks for the email Ryan.  I think im more exicted about finding some people to fly rod with than the trip........ nah its the albies.   looking like this weekend is gonna be a wash out for paddling the suds localy, by our weather man here at least.  I am itching to at least get out looking for them somewhere, sooner.

Definitely in for the Nov trip, and anything related before.

Re: Harkers Island Trip

No doubt. I think it would be awesome to get a good turnout of yakkers. So if anyone else is interested I'm going to try and set up a happy hour sometime next week to discuss the logistics of the trip over a few beers and maybe set up a fly tying session for those who are interested. So if your even just entertaining the idea of going post up, or be looking for the meeting date and time. It's almost lil' tunny time!

I'm going to bring the bi-noc's to Hatteras this weekend and if I see the water explode with footballs I'm paddling out no matter how gnarly it's blowing. All this North wind looks good for Bull Reds from the surf though!!! Pumped to get down there and pitch some weight!
